Understanding Relationship Struggles and Our Approach to Online Couples Therapy

Couples often arrive at therapy feeling stuck. Communication has become defensive or distant. Old conflicts resurface without resolution. Sometimes, unprocessed trauma from each partner’s past quietly undermines the relationship, creating patterns neither person fully understands. At Turning Tides Counselling & Life Coaching, we recognize that relationship difficulties rarely exist in isolation. They are connected to how each person learned to connect, protect themselves, and manage emotion.

Our online couples therapy serving British Columbia begins with a straightforward truth: your relationship can change when both partners feel genuinely heard. We use Internal Family Systems (IFS) informed care as our foundation, combined with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and somatic approaches tailored to your specific dynamics. This means we help you understand not just what you argue about, but why certain topics trigger such strong reactions. We work with the parts of each person that protect, defend, and sometimes sabotage connection. When you understand these protective patterns, you can choose differently.

What makes this work is the safety of the space itself. Our online format means you can access support from home, without the logistics of travel or the pressure of a waiting room. Kotone Frankowski, a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor with five years of experience, creates an environment where both partners can be vulnerable without fear of judgment. We welcome all couples, including LGBTQ+ partners and those in non-traditional relationship structures. Between sessions, you receive email support to help you apply what you have learned.

The real shift happens when couples stop seeing each other as the problem and start seeing the patterns as the problem. That distinction changes everything. Our couples therapy and relationship counselling services are designed to help you rebuild trust, improve how you communicate, and reconnect with why you chose each other in the first place. If either partner carries unresolved trauma, we address that directly, because healing individually strengthens the relationship.

What Is Online Couples Therapy?

Online Couples Therapy at Turning Tides Counselling & Life Coaching addresses the real struggles that affect relationships. Whether you’re navigating communication breakdowns, rebuilding trust after betrayal, managing the weight of individual trauma that spills into your partnership, or simply feeling emotionally distant from your partner, our online couples therapy offers a different kind of support. Led by Kotone Frankowski, a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor with certification in trauma from Evergreen Certificates, our couples therapy integrates care informed by trauma research with practical relationship skills. We work with both partners to identify the patterns that keep you stuck, to understand how past experiences shape present conflicts, and to rebuild the emotional safety that allows real connection to happen. Our approach draws on Internal Family Systems work, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and somatic methods, tailored to what your relationship actually needs. Sessions are conducted securely online, making support accessible whether you’re in Vancouver, across British Columbia, or anywhere else. We serve couples navigating trauma’s impact on intimacy, infidelity recovery, codependency patterns, life transitions, anxiety or depression affecting your bond, and diverse relationship structures including LGBTQ+ and non-monogamous partnerships. Each 50-minute session creates space for both of you to be heard without judgment. Coverage may be available based on your individual insurance policy with providers including Canada Life, Green Shield Canada, Manulife, SunLife, and Pacific Blue Cross. The question isn’t whether your relationship can improve; it’s whether you’re ready to do the work together. Contact us for a 20-minute consultation to discuss what couples therapy might look like for you.
