Understanding Trauma and Finding Healing Through Shared Stories

Many people who have experienced trauma feel isolated in their pain. Complex trauma, relationship struggles, and the weight of difficult emotions can make you feel like you’re the only one carrying this burden. What if healing didn’t require sitting alone in a therapist’s office? What if it happened in community, through stories that mirror your own experience, guided by someone who truly understands trauma’s impact?

Our Therapy Book Club serving British Columbia recognizes that trauma recovery happens differently for different people. Some clients find that reading about others’ healing journeys helps them understand their own. When you discuss these stories in a safe group setting, something shifts. You realize you’re not broken. You’re responding normally to abnormal experiences. This is where real change begins. Our book club combines Internal Family Systems informed care, somatic approaches, and acceptance and commitment therapy within a literature-based format that feels less clinical and more human.

Led by a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor with certification in trauma care, Turning Tides’ book club meets weekly online, making it accessible whether you’re in Vancouver or a remote community across the province. At affordable rates, you get professional guidance plus peer support, which research shows strengthens recovery. We welcome clients from all cultural backgrounds and provide affirming space for LGBTQ2S+ individuals and those navigating non-traditional relationships.

The real advantage? You’re not choosing between individual therapy and community support. You’re getting both, on your terms, at a pace that works for your life.

What Is Therapy Book Club?

Therapy Book Club at Turning Tides Counselling & Life Coaching is an affordable, online group experience where participants read and discuss books focused on healing from trauma, managing emotions, and building stronger relationships. Led by Kotone Frankowski, a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor, the book club creates a safe space for people dealing with complex trauma, relationship challenges, or life transitions to learn from literature while receiving support from others on similar paths. Each Wednesday session brings together individuals who want to understand themselves better through guided discussion and shared reflection. Rather than sitting alone with difficult feelings, you join a community of people committed to growth. The books selected address topics like emotional regulation, self-esteem, trauma recovery, and personal purpose. Participants often find that seeing their struggles reflected in stories and ideas helps them feel less isolated and more hopeful about change. This is not a lecture or a classroom. It is a conversation where your voice matters. You contribute what resonates with you, listen to others’ perspectives, and discover new ways of thinking about your own life. The cost is minimal, making this option accessible whether or not your insurance covers counselling services. Whether you are already working with a therapist or exploring support for the first time, the Therapy Book Club offers a meaningful way to deepen your understanding and connect with others who understand what you are going through.

If you are curious about whether the Therapy Book Club might support your healing, reach out to Turning Tides Counselling & Life Coaching to learn more about upcoming book selections and session times. A brief conversation can help you decide if this group is the right fit for where you are right now.
