Understanding PTSD and How We Support Your Healing

Post-traumatic stress disorder affects how your brain processes frightening or overwhelming events. You might experience intrusive memories, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, or avoidance of reminders. These aren’t character flaws. They’re your nervous system’s protective response to danger, even when the threat has passed. Many people struggle silently, believing they should simply ‘move on.’ The truth is that PTSD requires skilled support to help your brain and body recognize safety again.

At Turning Tides Counselling & Life Coaching, we use Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy as our primary approach, combined with somatic therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and cognitive behavioural therapy. These methods work because they address both the emotional and physical dimensions of trauma. IFS helps you understand different parts of yourself that may be stuck in protective mode, while somatic approaches help your body release the tension it’s been holding. We also welcome clients from all cultural backgrounds and provide specialized support for those from diverse communities, including Indigenous peoples.

Our PTSD treatment focuses on three core goals: helping you feel safe in your own body, processing the traumatic memory in a controlled way, and rebuilding your sense of competence and connection. You’ll work with Kotone Frankowski, a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor with certification in trauma from Evergreen Certificates, who has five years of experience supporting people through complex trauma. Sessions are available online, making treatment accessible whether you’re in Vancouver or elsewhere across British Columbia. Coverage may be available based on your individual policy with providers like Canada Life, Green Shield Canada, Manulife, SunLife, or Pacific Blue Cross.

You don’t have to carry this alone. Many people find that within the first few sessions, they experience a shift in how they relate to their trauma. They begin to feel heard, understood, and genuinely supported. That’s where healing begins. If you’re ready to explore how we can help, we offer a 20-minute consultation to discuss your needs and answer your questions.

What Is PTSD Treatment?

PTSD treatment at Turning Tides Counselling & Life Coaching addresses the lingering effects of traumatic experiences through care informed by trauma research. Post-traumatic stress disorder develops when the nervous system becomes stuck in survival mode after a frightening or dangerous event. Our Registered Therapeutic Counsellor works with you to help your brain and body process what happened, gradually reducing the intensity of memories, nightmares, and physical reactions that keep you trapped in the past.

We use evidence-based approaches including Internal Family Systems, somatic techniques that work directly with your body’s stress responses, cognitive behavioural therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. Each approach serves a specific purpose. Some help you understand why your mind and body react the way they do. Others teach you practical skills to manage overwhelming emotions when they arise. The goal is not to forget what happened but to change your relationship with the memory so it no longer controls your life.

What makes PTSD treatment different here is the recognition that trauma lives in the body, not just the mind. You might experience sudden panic, difficulty sleeping, or a sense of danger that feels constant. These are normal responses to abnormal events. Our counsellor creates a safe space where you can process your experience at your own pace, building trust gradually as you begin to feel more stable and grounded.

Treatment typically unfolds in phases. First comes stabilisation, where you learn tools to manage distressing symptoms and feel more in control. Then comes processing, where you address the traumatic memory itself with professional support. Finally comes integration, where you rebuild your sense of safety and reconnect with life. This structure helps prevent you from becoming overwhelmed while still moving toward genuine healing.

Online sessions make treatment accessible whether you are in Vancouver or anywhere across British Columbia. Coverage may be available based on your individual insurance policy with providers including Canada Life, Green Shield Canada, Manulife, SunLife, and Pacific Blue Cross. A free 20-minute consultation lets you discuss your specific situation and determine whether this approach feels right for you. Contact Turning Tides today to begin reclaiming your life from the grip of trauma.
