Understanding Complex PTSD and How We Support Your Healing

Complex PTSD develops differently than single-incident trauma. When you’ve experienced repeated harm, prolonged stress, or multiple traumatic events, your nervous system learns to stay in protection mode. You might find yourself struggling with emotional regulation, difficulty trusting others, or a persistent sense that something is wrong with you. These aren’t character flaws. They’re your system’s intelligent response to what happened. What changes in counselling is how you relate to those responses.

Our Complex PTSD counselling at Turning Tides uses Internal Family Systems therapy as our foundation, alongside somatic approaches and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Rather than pathologising your symptoms, we work with the different parts of you that developed to keep you safe. We help you understand why your body reacts the way it does, and we build new ways of relating to yourself with compassion instead of criticism. This isn’t about forcing positivity. It’s about creating genuine safety from the inside out.

You’ll work with a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor trained in trauma recovery and certified in trauma-specific work. Sessions are 50 minutes, available online, and we accept major Canadian insurance providers. Many clients find that within the first few weeks, they notice small shifts: sleeping slightly better, feeling less reactive to reminders of what happened, or simply feeling understood for the first time. Our CPTSD support group also connects you with others who truly understand this experience, reducing the isolation that often accompanies complex trauma.

Your nervous system learned to protect you. Our role is to help it learn that safety is possible now.

What Is Complex PTSD (CPTSD) Counselling?

Complex PTSD (CPTSD) counselling at Turning Tides Counselling & Life Coaching addresses the lingering effects of prolonged or repeated trauma that goes beyond standard PTSD. When someone has experienced multiple traumatic events, especially during childhood or in relationships, the nervous system can become stuck in patterns of fear and disconnection. Our CPTSD counselling helps you understand how past trauma shapes your present moment, your relationships, and your sense of self. We use approaches grounded in Internal Family Systems, somatic work, and other evidence-based methods to help you process what happened and rebuild safety within yourself. What makes CPTSD different is that it often involves deep shame, difficulty trusting others, and challenges with emotional regulation. Our counsellor works with you to address these specific struggles through compassionate, trauma informed care that recognises your resilience. Whether you’re experiencing flashbacks, emotional overwhelm, relationship difficulties stemming from past trauma, or a persistent sense of being broken, our CPTSD support creates space for real healing. We offer individual sessions both online and through our CPTSD support group, where you can connect with others who truly understand. Many people find that naming what they’ve experienced and learning why their nervous system responds the way it does becomes the first step toward genuine recovery.

If you’re ready to explore how CPTSD counselling might support your healing, we invite you to reach out. A free 20-minute conversation can help us understand what you’re facing and whether our approach feels right for you. Reclaim Your Life Through Specialized Trauma Recovery

Our Complex PTSD (CPTSD) counselling at Turning Tides Counselling & Life Coaching serving Vancouver and across British Columbia focuses on helping you move beyond survival mode and into genuine healing.
